Applying the 80/20 Rule and 100 hours

Marietta, GA – Applying the 80/20 Rule and 100 hours

The rule of 100 states that if you spend 100 hours a year, which is 18 minutes a day – in any discipline, you’ll be better than 95% of the world, in that discipline. Anders Ericcson developed this formula of purposeful practice in a study that was published in 1976.

In addition, the Pareto Principle or the 80/20 Rule as it has come to be known, breaks down the percentages that separate the masses from the average, the gifted to the exceptional. If we want to be exceptional or elite in any given group, we should expect to be different. Act differently, on purpose.

Read something meaningful such as a good book for 18 minutes a day (Facebook or Instagram doesn’t count) and you will be in the top 5% percentile of all readers. Practice a skill for just 4 or 5 hours a day and you will rise to the top 1% of your field.

Are you willing to be exceptional? To be in the top 1% of whatever path you choose?

Thank you all for your awesome feedback and comments, I appreciate it more than you know.

PS. Shout out to Andy Feldman who is both a friend and colleague. His dogged determination and critical thinking inspires me to be better.

Prepare for the Possibility

Kennesaw, GA – Ability plus Opportunity is Everything (A + O = E)

Napoleon Bonaparte wrote that “ability without opportunity is nothing”. I like to modify this quotation to be a little more positive and say that our abilities and taking advantage of opportunity forms our destiny.

Malcom Gladwell writes in his book, “Outliers”, that successful people work hard at developing their abilities and practicing their talents, then seize opportunities when they present themselves.

Realize that we have all been given some type of privilege on this earth. When developing our potential, we should give back to others which completes the circle of our life here on this rock we call home.

A man is the author of his own life

Kennesaw, GA – A man is the author of his own life. -Anon

One of the blessings of being an American citizen is the concept of self determination guaranteed in our Constitution. Our founders felt that the freedom to pursue personal liberty is a right given from God and confirmed in our American citizenship.

For those of us blessed to be born in America, don’t let this right be squandered. Be the author of your life. Pursue your happiness and share it with others. Be a net contributor to the grand American experiment and not just a consumer of the blessings we have been given.

Success is a process

Powder Springs, GA – Success is a process

Another great quote from Winston Churchill to reread,

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts

The steps of the process for success is easy to understand. Here they are:

Plan (Prepare the strategy)

Perform (Implement the plan)

Perfect (incremental improvements)

Persist (work hard at achievement)

Begin with small projects and apply these steps. They can scale as the project’s goals and objectives get larger.

Good luck!
